Two of the engineers from the company that built the solid rocket boosters begged NASA not to launch and said flat out If you launch in freezing conditions you will kill those 7 people. There’s a documentary on you tube where they interview them both and to this day they say the same thing. I was in 7th grade when it happened and didn’t find out about it until I got home from school because they wouldn’t show it to us.

i cant believe this happened my family said it waas more painful when it happened then how it is now because even im confused how this could happen…what happened to the 18 kids…what was there expression?
all you people saying nasa should have checked the ship the problem was faulty sealing in the rocket that couldnt have been seen and nasa spends lots of time on those spaceships, there are so many things that could go wrong
All these people saying cheap parts caused this are wrong. It was a frozen o-ring, and now the lesson has been learned. Its sad.
Imagine what the teacher at 5:50 is feeling. Sad that the shuttle exploded and also guilty and grateful he was not selected.
Some shuttles explode because they reuse the same ship sometimes and just do a shitty inspection on them.
The company that made the boosters expressed concerns on launching in cold weather. But management there “put on their management hats instead of engineering hats” and okayed it. Due to the low temperature the o-ring in the booster never sealed. Some of the Thikol engineers thought 4 sure it would explode on the pad and thought it was alright when it lifted off. The same Engineers red flaged the o-ring problem on a previous flight to no avail.
I remember this happened on a Tuesday (my day off from my first job). I was studying for school (college). It was being covered by all major networks so there wasn’t much on TV. I couldn’t believe what I had just seen. I was in shock. The McAuliffe story was such a big story leading up to this trip. A shame.

Wake up sleepy185. The same shuttles are flying today as back in the 80′s. They are basically all the same vehicles except for some structural differences. What pre launch checks would you have knowledge of that Nasa is doing today that they were not doing back in 1986 ?

they did do checks befor the the shutles lift off. its just that back in 1986 nasa was not that advanced yet and there shutles were definatly not as well built as they are now, this was definatly a tragic event and its much wores knowing that the school kids had to witness this

I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was at my parents house and my mom woke me up to tell me about it and I ran into the living room to watch the news. Then , spent the rest of the day at a friends house watching CNN all day long and drinking beer. It was a day I’ll never forget. Can’t believe it was 24 years ago!!

horrible just horrible, i was but a child when this happened and don’t remember ever seeing anything about this tragedy, my question is do nasa always do a full thorough check before take off and could this diaster and the columbia diaster been prevented, i understand there’s risk when going to space and i know the astronauts know something could possibly go wrong and cause them their lives but is what happened with these flights been prevented

It was not launched with ice all over. It was 58 degrees when they launched. Ice formed the night before on the launch pad systems, not the shuttle stack.
@reconforsales I am not saying the moon landings were a fake, but the shuttle is not designed to go to the moon. How would it lift off?
